Setting the Baseline: The BC Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report 2007
Members of the Climate Action Secretariat provided an overview of BC's 2007 Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report on November 10. Topics included its background and purpose; the approach used to quantify and report emissions; overall and sector‐specific emission totals and trend analyses; anticipated improvements in quantification methods and data sources as well as their impact on baseline and future emission totals. Reducing the Carbon Footprint in Business and Industry
On September 18, Linda Mesaros from Mesaros Associates Inc., a small business specializing in environmental and energy consulting services for the US government gave a presentation on green industry; specifically addressing new technologies and other techniques used by business and industry to reduce waste and limit carbon emissions. Pacific Climate Seminar Series: Glacier-Climate Processes and Glacier Response to Climate Change
The Pacific Climate Seminar Series co-hosted by the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) and the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) was launched on September 16 with a presentation by Shawn Marshall, Department of Geography, University of Calgary. Climate Change and Health in Rural and Remote British Columbia
More than 70 researchers, policy makers, municipal leaders and students attended the above event hosted by The BC Rural and Remote Health Research Network (BCRRHRN) and the BC Environmental and Occupational Health Research Network (BCEOHRN) on June 26, 2009 at the Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver, BC. The main impetus for this event was the PICS White Paper on Climate Change and Health in BC.
Main conclusions of the forum included the need for interdisciplinary and collaborative research efforts to explore climate change and health at a more local level, and for ways to incorporate such climate change information into the tools used by decision-makers and planners.
Decoding Carbon Pricing: Achieving a Low Carbon Society in British Columbia
More than 200 people attended the "Decoding Carbon Pricing" forum on June 8 - 10, which featured a wide range of climate change experts and policymakers from government as well as the business, academic and NGO communities. This event marked the launch of PICS' new, annual series on climate change topics, created to provide a venue where controversial issues can be examined critically and policy approaches explored. PICS Campus Discussion/Information Session
On April 8, members of the campus community had the opportunity to participate in an open discussion on the Institute's near-term research directions. The session was led by the UVic members of the PICS Program Committee, Ned Djilali, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering (Chair) and Monika Winn, Faculty of Business. The full PICS Program Committee, with additional membership from UNBC, SFU and UBC as well as Environment Canada, consequently met at a two-day workshop in in late April to establish the initial two to three year research program for PICS.
Green Economy Dialogue
On April 7, PICS sponsored a one-day dialogue hosted by PowerUp Canada, that brought together members of the public with opinion leaders, decision makers, leading academics, and journalists for a frank and engaging dialogue on building a low carbon green economy in British Columbia. Climate Overview: Hydroclimatology and Future Climate Impacts in BC
On February 6, Dave Rodenhuis, Trevor Murdock and Arelia Werner from the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium presented the findings from their 2007 Climate Overview to members of the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and the Institute for Integrated Energy Systems at the University of Victoria.

Harnessing Human Energy for Climate Change Leadership
On January 21, PICS sponsored a special gathering of civic and business leaders in Vancouver with keynote speaker Göran Carstedt, one of Europe's most successful executives recognized as a global leader in the area of climate change, leadership and organizational change. Dr. Carstedt is currently a Senior Director with the Clinton Climate Initiative's Large Cities Project and a Senior Advisor with the Society for Organizational Learning.
